Men's Lacrosse Goes on 14-0 Run to Pull Away from Western New England in 21-8 Victory

MEDFORD - With the game tied 5-5 midway into the second quarter, the #1 ranked Tufts men's lacrosse team scored the next 14 goals and came away with 21-8 victory against Western New England University on Tuesday afternoon at Bello Field.

Junior Connor Bilby scored three goals during Tufts' 14-0 run

Junior John Uppgren scored five goals with an assist during the 14-goal stretch while classmate Connor Bilby had three goals and an assist. Eight different Jumbos scored goals during the run and the hosts had 10 goals total in the third quarter. It was 19-5 when the Golden Bears ended the run with a man-up goal from Justin Bard with 17 seconds left in the third.

Western New England had tied the game on Bard's goal assisted by Jon Bota making it 5-5 with 7:23 remaining in the second quarter. The Golden Bears had trailed 4-2 at the end of one quarter, but out-scored the Jumbos 3-1 early in the third. Bota also assisted on a Garrett Mulins goal which started the quarter for WNE.

Tufts would finish the second with four goals to lead 9-5 at intermission, including a pretty behind-the-back shot by junior Garrett Clarke and two man-up goals from Uppgren.

The Jumbos' 10-goal third period included tallies by senior Charlie Rubin, face-off man Conor Helfrich and a man-up goal by Bilby. Tufts was three for four with man-advantages overall.

Uppgren led the Jumbos with seven points, while sophomore Austin Carbone added two goals with three assists. Junior Ben Andreycak scored four times. Sophomore Mike Mattson scored his first career goal in the fourth.

The Jumbos won 22 face-offs, including 14 by Helfrich and seven by senior Ryan Le. Sophomore Blake Wood had four groundballs defensively. The wide margin allowed the Jumbos to play each of their four goalies. The Jumbo netminders stopped 23 of the 31 shots they faced. Junior Alex Salazar earned the win with 15 saves in 41:38 of play.

Bard led the Golden Bears with four goals and also caused two turnovers. Sophomore Max Berteletti finished with a goal and an assist. Sophomore Keegan Dudeck joined Bota in assisting twice. Western New England went three for seven in man-up situations. Senior Brandon Body had 13 saves in the Golden Bears' cage.

The Jumbos finished with a 51-44 advantage in shots and 37-19 in groundballs. 

Tufts (7-0) travels to Connecticut College for NESCAC action on Saturday at 5 pm. The Golden Bears (3-4) will be at Nichols on Saturday for a 4 pm Commonwealth Coast Conference contest.
