Ryan, a tri-captain who improved to 2-2, threw the first nine-inning complete game of his career. He struck out five, walked two and recorded 16 outs on the ground. The Jumbos scored five runs on four hits and five Salem State errors.
Tufts took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the second. Senior 1B James Howard led off with a walk and took second on sophomore RF Oscar Kutch's seeing-eye single up the middle. Howard scored when Connor McDavitt's fly ball was dropped when Vikings 2B Richard Fecteau and RF Kevin Carens collided in pursuit of it.
Fecteau made amends with a lead-off single in the fourth. After moving to second on a ground out, he scored on freshman DH Jose Cedano's single to left tying the game at 1-1.
Salem sophomore starter Tim Woods retired eight in a row from the third through the fifth. However, Tufts reached him for three in the sixth. Woods hit freshman 3B Tommy O'Hara with a pitch to lead off the inning. Jumbo freshman DH Michael McLaughlin followed with a single down the left field line and senior catcher Will Glazier bunted perfectly for a base hit to load the bases. A strong wind then took hold of Howard's fly ball and turned it into an rbi single. A fielder's choice by sophomore 2B Tom Petry and a Viking throwing error on the play while trying to turn two put Tufts up 4-1.
The Jumbos would add one more in the seventh. Sophomore LF Harry Brown was hit by a pitch to lead off. Salem made an error on Jumbo junior SS Matt Moser's bunt, and then a fielder's choice by O'Hora scored the run for a 5-1 Tufts lead.
Woods took the loss for Salem, dropping to 2-4. He went five innings allowing four hits and four runs (two earned) with three strikeouts and two walks. Senior Matt Turmenne and freshman Andrew McLaughlin an inning of no-run, no-hit relief for the Vikings.
Tufts (18-5) remains in non-league action with a single game at Keene State on Wednesday. Salem (13-9) plays two MASCAC games at Framingham State tomorrow.
