Top-Ranked Cortland Pulls Away from Women's Lacrosse for 18-10 Victory

MEDFORD - Junior Kristen Ohberg scored four goals with three assists as #1 ranked and defending national champion Cortland defeated #9 Tufts 18-10 in non-league women's lacrosse action Wednesday afternoon at Bello Field.

Olivia Veillette grabbed three groundballs and caused two turnovers

The Red Dragons out-scored Tufts 9-3 in the second half to pull away. Cortland improved to 5-0 overall. Seniors Nicole Bello (4 goals, 1 assist) and Tara Monaghan (3g, 1a), and sophomore Hannah Elmer (3g) also had productive days for the visitors.

The Jumbos (2-2) got two goals each from senior tri-captains Brigid Bowser and Caroline Ross, sophomore Kate Mackin, and freshman Megan Toner.

Tufts led 5-4 at the after Bowser's second goal at 17:17 of the first half. Ross also scored her second as a 3-0 Tufts run gave them the one-goal advantage.

Cortland closed the half with five of the next seven goals though to lead 9-7 at intermission. Bello and Ohberg both scored a pair during that stretch.

The Red Dragons opened up some breathing room by scoring four of the first five goals in the second half to lead 13-8 on Monaghan's first of the game at 18:27. Tufts closed to within 13-10 including a goal by freshman Gabby Vinci scored at 9:31, but that would be the last Jumbo goal. Cortland finished with five in a row.

Monaghan scored all three of her goals in the second half, while Ohberg notched her 200th career point with a goal at 8:04 of the second half. She and Bello both had two goals and an assist during the second half for the visitors.

Cortland finsihed with a 43-21 advantage in shots as Tufts freshman keeper Audrey Evers was busy with 13 saves. Red Dragons junior Jaclyn Beshlian stopped six at the other end.

Monaghan also won five draws and led Cortland with four groundballs. Senior Colleen Wright caused a pair of turnovers.

Ross finished with a game-high seven draw controls for Tufts. Junior defender Olivia Veillette and sophomore middie Jenn Duffy both caused two turnovers, while Veillette also had three groundballs.

Tufts plays at Colby in NESCAC action Friday at 7 pm. Cortland is off for almost a week before playing at Nazareth next Tuesday at 4 pm.
