MEDFORD – Senior Anthony Kardonsky's win in the 200 meters highlighted the Tufts University men's indoor track & field team's season-opener and home-opener at the Gantcher Center on Saturday.
Kardonsky won the 200 in 22.64 seconds, which is ranked 12th nationally early in the 2018-19 season. He also was the runner-up in the 60-meter dash finishing in 7.05 seconds for the #35 national ranking.
Teams competing with the Jumbos at the Tufts Invitational included Bridgewater State, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Coast Guard, Emmanuel, Keene State, Springfield, UMass Dartmouth, UMass Lowell, Wentworth and Worcester State. It was a non-scoring meet.
Jumbo senior Benji Wallace had a good season debut in the pole vault, clearing 14'5 ¼" (4.40m) for second place at the meet and the #22 spot on the national list.
Among freshmen making their collegiate debuts for the Jumbos, Collin O'Sullivan had the highest finish with his second in the 1,000 meters (2:36.91). He was followed in third place by junior Dylan McEniry at 2:37.65.
A pair of freshmen registered third-place finishes for Tufts. Ben Stein began collegiate competition with a best of 20'10" (6.35) in the long jump. Alexander Zsikla went 42'5 ½" (12.94m) for third place in the triple jump.
Another Jumbo posting a top 40 national mark was junior thrower Kevin Quisumbing. He took fourth in the shot put with a 47'3 ¼" (14.42m) toss that is exactly 40th in the country early on in 2019.
Senior Josh Etkind timed 8.75 seconds in the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles for second place, but did not compete in the final.
Tufts hits the road to Maine for next Saturday's Bowdoin Invitational.
