Men's Track & Field Hits Many National Marks Early in Spring Season at PLNU

Billy Witrock ran strong marks in the 400 hurdles and with the 4x4.

SAN DIEGO – The Tufts University men's outdoor track & field team posted 21 national top 50 marks in its first outing of the season at the Ross and Sharon Irwin Collegiate Scoring Meet hosted by Point Loma Nazarene University on Saturday.

It's early in the outdoor season, but the Jumbos scattered their name all over the Division III national lists with Saturday's efforts. Several of the 21 national marks were among the top 15.

Senior pole vaulter Benji Wallace is fifth in Division III early on with his 14'11" (4.55m) best today. Junior Kevin Quisumbing also had a top 10 effort in the field events as his 47'9 ¾"(14.57m) shot put is sixth nationally.

The 4x100-meter relay debuted for 2019 with junior Jordan Abate, senior Anthony Kardonsky, sophomore OJ Armstrong and junior Robert Jones running a time of 42.06 seconds that is fifth nationally as of 11:30 pm Saturday evening.

Kardonsky individually had a pair of runs that ranked 12th nationally. He was seventh out of 42 at the meet in the 100 meters with a 10.96 time and placed ninth among 52 entries in the 200 with a 22.19 time. Armstrong in the 200 (22.28) and Jones in the 100 (11.05) had the #20 and #25 national times, respectively. Armstrong was also Tufts' top 400 performer with a 50.65, #29 on the DIII list.

The 4x4 of freshman Riley Patten, freshman Sam Oomen-Lochtefeld, junior Billy Witrock and senior Thomas Doyle recorded a 3:25.51 time that is at #11.

Witrock notched his own Division III top 10 mark in the 400-meter hurdles with a 55.93 time (eighth), while Patten his freshman teammate is right behind him ranked 11th with a 56.18 from today's meet. Freshman Collin O'Sullivan's 1:56.05 in the 800 is the #9 time in DIII early on.

Senior Rory Buckman enjoyed a personal-best day as he timed 4:02.81 in the 1,500 meters, ranked #21 nationally.

Also in the field events, senior Henry Hintermeister launched the javelin 173'3" (52.80m) for a #14 national ranking. Junior Christian Trebisacci had his PR in the hammer throw with a 136'0" (41.46m). Sophomore Matthew Manteiga's 20'11 ¾" (6.39m) long jump is a top 50 national mark.

Tufts was fifth out of 12 teams scoring at the meet.

The Jumbos will be in San Diego all week and compete in Point Loma Nazarene's PLNU Collegiate Invitational next Saturday.
