SAN DIEGO – Junior Kevin Quisumbing of the Tufts University men's outdoor track & field team won the shot put with the #2 distance in the country on Saturday at the PLNU Invitational hosted by Point Loma Nazarene University.
Tufts finished its week in San Diego at the meet and placed second out of 13 scoring teams.
Quisumbing threw the shot a career-best 51'7" (15.72m) to win the event featuring 23 entries. He's ranked behind only Texas Lutheran senior Garrett Garza (55'0 ¾" – 16.78m) in Division III as of late Saturday night. Quisumbing was also fourth in the discus on Saturday at 148'10" (45.37m).
Senior co-captain Henry Hintermeister was the other Jumbo to win an event on Saturday as he launched the javelin 177'10" (54.22) to top the 12-man field. The distance is 15th nationally.
The top running performance in terms of national ranking came from senior Tom Doyle. His 49.02 mark in the 400 meters ranks eighth in DIII and was third out of 36 in the race. It's his personal record by half a second (49.55 previously). Junior Roman Lovell also recorded a top 10 national mark and PR with his 1:55.97 in the 800 meters. He placed fourth out of 38 in the race and is #9 on the national list.
Junior Billy Witrock took 0.16 off his season-best in the 400-meter hurdles time with Saturday's finish of 55.77 seconds. He remains ranked 12th in the nation. Freshman Nicholas Delaney put himself into the DIII top 20 with a 3:59.82 in the 1,500 meters today (18th).
Other top 25 marks for the Jumbos came from senior Anthony Kardonsky in the 200 meters (22.13), six-tenths of a second better than his previous season-best. Sophomore Matthew Manteiga's 21'10" (6.65m) long jump is 25th.
Another notable effort was sophomore Peter Horvath with a 15:10.51 PR for fourth place in the 5,000 meters.
Tufts is back on campus next week and will host the annual Snowflake Classic at Ellis Oval / Dussault Track on Saturday.
