MEDFORD – Senior Josh Etkind won the 110-meter hurdles with a mark that is ranked sixth nationally as the Tufts men's outdoor track & field team opened its New England schedule with the annual Snowflake Classic on Saturday.
Competing at Ellis Oval/Dussault Track, Etkind ran 14.71 seconds to defeat RPI's Alex Jonson (15.07). Etkind's time is sixth-best in DIII as of Sunday morning.
Tufts won six events overall. Sophomore Matthew Manteiga unloaded a career-best 22'6 ¼" (6.86m) to win the long jump and earn a #16 mark nationally. Junior thrower Kevin Quisumbing was first in both the shot put and the hammer throw. His 152'11" (46.61m) win in the hammer throw is a career-best, and he won the shot put for the second straight week with an even 50'0" (15.42m) heave.
The Jumbos were also first in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 42.70 seconds by junior Jordan Abate, senior Anthony Kardonsky, senior Brandon Levenstein and junior Robert Jones. The time is 36th-best nationally. Senior Benji Wallace had his eighth career win in the pole vault with 14'5 ¼" (4.40m) clearance.
Adding to an excellent day in the hurdle events, freshman Riley Patten was second in the 400 hurdles with a time of 55.59 seconds. It's the #20 best mark in the nation as of Sunday morning.
In Tufts' first 10K of the season, senior Dylan Jones was the runner-up with a 32:33.06 time and freshman Joseph Harmon was right behind him (32:33.14). Other runner-up finishes for the Jumbos came from Kardonsky in the 100 (10.98) and freshman Neerav Gade in the 5,000 (15:40.35).
Tufts finished second as a team with 151 points, close behind first-place RPI (157.5). Amherst was the third-place team with a 92 score.
