Double-header Sweep at Colby Gives Baseball 11th NESCAC East Pennant

WATERVILLE, Maine – The Tufts University baseball team won its sixth consecutive NESCAC East Division pennant and 11th overall during a double-header sweep at Colby College on Saturday afternoon. Tufts won by 10-1 and 7-2 scores.

Sophomore Brandon Bay had three hits and five rbis in the two games.

The Jumbos (26-7) finished their NESCAC East schedule with a 10-2 mark. Their win in today's opener, which was their ninth in divisional play at the time, gave Tufts the flag. Bates College finished second in the East and earned a tournament spot with a 9-3 mark.

Tufts senior pitcher R.J. Hall improved to 6-0 with the win in today's seven-inning first game. He went the distance allowing six hits and one run with five K's and one walk.

The Jumbos scored in each of the first four innings. In the first, Peter DeMaria continued his outstanding freshman season with an rbi double putting Tufts in front 1-0. A two-run double by senior LF Casey Santos-Ocampo highlighted a three-run second frame that gave the Jumbos a 4-0 advantage. Senior catcher Harrison Frickman hit a two-run home run with two outs in the third and Tufts led 6-0.

Colby scored its lone run in the third inning after two were out. Senior SS Matt Mitchell singled and scored on a double by senior RF Keenan Iuliano.

Tufts then scored four times in the fourth to lead 10-1. Sophomore RF Brandon Bay hit a two-run triple in the inning and then scored on a wild pitch.

Hall surrendered two-out doubles to sophomore 2B Chris Romano in the fifth and sophomore Jonah Katz in the sixth, but neither runner scored.

Frickman finished game one 2 for 4 with two runs and two rbis, while Santos-Ocampo went 1 for 2 with two rbis and two runs. DeMaria had two hits and junior CF Justin Mills scored twice.

Junior CF Will Phillips had a pair of hits for Colby. Junior Emery Dinsmore was the losing pitcher, giving up seven hits and nine runs (eight earned) in 3.2 innings. Mules senior Andrew Sterup pitched two innings of no-hit, no-run relief.

After four scoreless innings in the nightcap, Colby took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Mitchell and Iuliano did the damage again with a triple from the latter scoring the former, who had singled.

The Jumbos finally got to Mules senior starter Will Cohen in the sixth. He had thrown five one-hit innings before junior 2B Elias Varinos, Mills and Bay had consecutive singles to start the sixth. Bay's tied the game at 1-1. With senior Brooks Parker on in relief, a run-scoring single by DeMaria and a fielder's choice rbi by sophomore DH Kyle Cortese put Tufts up 3-1.

Bay finished a good day with a two-run double to cap a four-run ninth inning by the Jumbos. Senior SS Will Shackelford also hit a two-run double during the inning when Tufts took a 7-1 lead.

Colby added a run in the bottom of the ninth on a lead-off single by Sterup and a rbi single from Mitchell.

Jumbo freshman starter Aidan Tucker went seven innings allowing eight hits and one run for his sixth victory against no defeats. Junior Spencer Langdon earned his fifth save with two innings allowing three hits and a run.

Mills was 2 for 5 with two runs for the Jumbos, while Bay entered as a sub and ended up 2 for 3 with three rbis.

Mitchell had three hits for Colby, while Iuliano, senior 1B Tyler Mulberry and senior LF Jackson Ward all had two hits. Both teams finished with 11 hits in the game.

Cohen (5 IP, 4 H, 3 R) ended up with the loss. Sophomore Frank Driscoll pitched three innings off scoreless relief for the Mules.

Tufts wraps up its regular-season at Southern Maine on Sunday. The Huskies are the #1 Divsion III team in the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association poll and #3 in the D3baseball. com national rankings. Today was the final games of the season for the Mules (10-18, 0-12 NESCAC East).
